Christmas may be approaching us at high speed but there are still lots of great things to do across Brighton this December. Here we’ve rounded up some of the best free and cheap events so you can have a great time and still afford that that jazzy Christmas jumper!

dirty-beachTruCost Super M-Art Exhibition – ONCA Gallery

Dirty Beach, a partnership between Brighton-based artist Lou McCurdy and eco-graffitist Hanksy, will be opening a unique supermarket that not only displays discarded plastic items found on UK beaches. ‘TruCost’ uses all the tricks and trappings of a retail giant, bright, controlled lighting, soothing tannoy announcements, enticing point-of-sale promotions, yet with stock that consists of tongue-in-cheek parodies of own brand product lines.

Over 50 houses will be opening their doors, showcasing an incredibly diverse selection of artworks, all available to buy directly from local artists and makers in their homes or studios. Expect a fantastic array of graphic prints, paintings, paper cut sculptures, felt toys, home wares, knitted artwork, photography, jewellery, ceramics, crafts, toys and textiles. Seasonal attractions include handcrafted Christmas cards, wreaths, tree decorations and foodie gifts.

A original Brighton busking band, they blend guitar, sax and helicon tuba and turn the venue into a toe tapping feast of lively harmonies. BordelloLa Bordello Boheme – Funfair

La Bordello Boheme welcomes you into their wonderful wardrobe of Narnia where they promise to take you on a magical mystery tour complete with charismatic cabaret and sultry sounds blended with a risqué ritual of burlesque. The mistress of ceremonies, the infamous Veronica Blacklace and her troupe of burlesque beauties will openly invite you through the doors of their funfair for this one-off intimate and insatiable soirée not to be missed. A mixture of stand-up comedians, entertainers and musical comedians will keep you on your toes. Come in and warm up by the log fire before going upstairs to a cocoon of comedy that will warm up your insides. Archie Maddocks headlines with support from Ingrid Elise Dahl, Dick Tongue, Matt Banks, Emma Martin, Nigel Lovell, Jorik Mol, Cecilia Delatori and Laura Lexx returns after putting down a heckler in the most devastating way I’ve ever witnessed at the last Comedy Corner!

Burning of The Clocks – Brighton City Centre to the Seafront

This year we celebrate the 19th Anniversary of the Brighton-based festival, the Burning of the Clocks. This annual celebration of the winter solstice features a procession of willow and tissue paper lanterns and costumes which work their way through the city centre to the seafront, where there is a bonfire accompanied by spectacular fireworks. The parade is accompanied by live music from local bands, including Maracatu, Bloco Fogo and Brighton School of Samba.
