Things to do at the Weekend: 8th – 9th February

Valentine’s is fast approaching but there’s lots of great events this Weekend in Brighton to take your mind off of all of that, or you could even use it as an opportunity to get that special gift! Here’s our highlights including exhibitions, science festivals, craft and vintage fairs, poetry, theatre, comedy, live music and club nights.

All Weekend:

20 Painters – Celebrating the strength and vibrancy of contemporary painting in the South East region today. Responding to an open submission call to artists based in Sussex, Kent and Surrey, twenty artists were selected to show their work at Phoenix Gallery this year.

Brighton Science Festival – Brighton’s Science Festival is back to liven up your February once more, with a wide range of weird and wonderful exhibitions, talks, workshops and much more all across Sussex. Prices vary but many events are FREE! Here are some of our top picks from the festival.

Polar Nights – Polyarnye Nochi (or Polar Nights) is part of acclaimed British photographer Simon Roberts’ first major project, Motherland, an exploration of contemporary Russian society displayed at Brighton Dome. This series focuses on winter in northern Russia, finding a region shrouded in darkness nearly 24 hours a day.

Fanfare – This years first exhibition at Ink_d Gallery. Showing work from John Simpson and Pure Evil as well as pieces from London Art Show from artists Miss Bugs, Carne Griffiths and Carrie Reichardt.

Art Schism presents – “When you’re in love everything happens in slow motion.” From the 7th of February Art Schism artists shall be giving you all one of the greatest gifts of love – an arts mixtape. Each artist will be creating work that takes a poignant love song from their life and translating this in to a visual medium.


Bright ‘n’ Crafty – Valentines Fair – Don’t wait until the last minute to grab yourself an extra special Valentine’s Day present for your loved one! Get to Brighton’s fabulous, affordable, art and craft fair at the Church Of The Good Shepherd.  A monthly event where local artists can sell their wares, meet other creative people and network to their heart’s content.

A Waste of Space – An evening of poetry and performance at ONCA Gallery. A celebration of the unused, the unwanted, and the overlooked. The evening will include readings and prize-giving from our Waste of Space competition, and poetry and storytelling performances.

Confessions of a Rabbi’s Daughter – A One-Woman musical, at The Marlborough Theatre, about an Orthodox Rabbi’s Daughter’s growing feelings for her best friend, Sarah, whilst engaged to her father’s assistant. Read our preview HERE.

The Studio 9 Orchestra – A 20-piece ensemble perform at The Old Market, specialise in 20th Century Jazz, Funk and Latin compositions. S9O pride themselves on performing intricate, orchestral pieces from some of the world’s greatest contemporary composers, aiming for emotion, scope and communicating with our audience, to bring a fresh approach to big band playing.

Todd Edwards + Jackmaster – Todd Edwards employs vocal reconstruction techniques to his songs, creating a unique vocal collage. You never know what you’re going to get with Jackmaster, this element of glorious surprise is crucial to his sets: from the lost Dance Mania gems he spends his time unearthing to the latest hip-hop & RnB tracks to straight-up house and techno sets. Lou Lou’s Vintage Fair – This great Vintage Fair returns to the Brighton Dome. Held in the spectacular Corn Exchange, expect the place to be packed out with 50 vintage stalls for Men & Women alongside some handmade and home-wares too!

Art Deco Fair – 1920′s – 1970′s stalls and furniture at Hove Town Hall. With Ceramics & Studio Pottery, Glass, Figures & Figurines, Jewellery & Items of Personal Adornment, Accessories, Bakelite & Plastics, Chrome,Lamps/ Lighting, Clocks, Mirrors, Household, Pictures/ Prints, Furniture, Dining, Occasional, Living, Books and much more!

Gaz Brookfield – A solo acoustic musician whose songs are every-man tales of life, love and everything else in between. Brookfield has had the pleasure of gigging and/or touring with Frank Turner, Newton Faulkner, The Levellers, The Ataris, Mike Herrera (MXPX), I Am Kloot, Miles Hunt, Dodgy, Jim Lockey and The Solemn Sun, Dave McPherson and many more. The Murderettes – Will our hero get justice? Your ideas create a comic dark murder mystery performed by The Murderettes at Komedia, who’ve been setting the London improv scene alight.
