March is well under way and the sun is actually shining! (Well on and off anyway!) There are lots of great events on offer across Brighton come rain or shine with vintage fashion, photography, arts festivals, retro fairs, live music, theatre, comedy, dancing and even a Women’s Day Spectacular!

All Weekend:

Gathering Light: Breaking Form – A provocative two-part exhibition at The Old Market, by award-winning photographer Clare Park. Collaborating with patients, their families and doctors, Clare captures the hope and strength of human spirit that shone through their shared experiences.

SICK! Festival – Confronting the physical, mental and social challenges of life and death.This new art and cultural festival explores the issues surrounding adolescence, mental illness, ageing and death with a programme of live performances, dance, installation, film and debates across Brighton. WhaleFest Arts – Ahead of Whalefest on the 15-16th March this exhibition at ONCA Gallery, curated by artist and naturalist Darren Rees, is a celebration of all things aquatic. Expect monumental woodcuts, huge charcoal drawings, mural sized canvasses, colourful wall hangings, ceramics, batiks, oversize knitted plankton and even Inuit art carved from a whale vertebrae.

Vintage fashion at Churchill Square –  The clothes, shoes and accessories of Concetta Trotta, an Italian woman who lived in Brighton from 1954 until her death last year, will be on view in Churchill Square. With clothes dating from 1965 to the early 70’s  which reflect the fashions of the time.  The exhibition will not only reveal the fashions of the past but also tell the story of the life of a local woman and the area in which she lived.

Saturday:

Belle’s Vintage and Retro Fair – Over 25 stalls full of fashion, accessories, makers, furniture, kitchenalia, retro home wares, toys at Brighton Unitarian Church. Plus grab a cupcake and a cuppa in the Pop-Up Vintage Tea Room. You can even get a vintage makeover!

The Correspondents New Album Tour – The dynamic duo return to Concorde2 after their selling out their C2 shows for four years running! Effortlessly swinging between electro, blues, jazz, dubstep and back again, you’ll be blown away by their insane explosion of a live show! Enjoy!

To The Green Fields Beyond – Two Bins return  bringing their 10th production to their home at the Open House. During the closing weeks of the Great War, a British tank crew face an uncertain future the night before a ‘final’ push. They must make a critical decision if they are to remain the tight-knit, eight man unit that operates like the machine they take into battle.

Laughing Horse Big Saturday Show – Laughing Horse present a night of Stand Up Comedy featuring five different acts each week at The Quadrant.

Traumfrau and Pink Fringe Present: Women’s Day Spectacular – Prepare yourself to experience and enjoy a radical and new format of fun – a different way to experience theatre and a fulfilling way to go clubbing! A night of interestingly different performances and participatory art, a warehouse of things happening to and with the audience, a garden of wild things, followed by a dance floor with a twist.

Sunday:

Eccentric Dancing – Learn how to wiggle and waggle in the most ridiculous ways at The Nightingale, taking inspiration from music hall veterans to hip performance artists. We will look at numbers and techniques of some of the greatest proponents of the genre such as Max Miller, Harry Champion and of course Wilson, Keppel and Betty with their famous sand dance.

Sunday Acoustic Session – What could be lovelier on a Sunday afternoon after a traditional roast than relaxing on plush leather sofas with a pint and enjoying some of the best acoustic music in Brighton. The Lord Nelson will be showcasing some legendary and up and coming talent performing original folk, blues and rock stripped back to it’s bare bones in an intimate and relaxed environment.

Green Door Blues – A night of foot stomping Rythum and Blues at Green Door Store. Featuring resident trio Smokestack, and a roster of special LIVE guests + DJ Hep Cat Matt.
