Capsule Wardrobe: Key Pieces to Buy Now
Hi everyone, I’m the new Style Columnist for We Love Brighton! *waves* I plan to bring you a bunch of ideas and tips on dressing your best, making it easy and telling you what’s out there on the fashion and beauty front.
This first feature tells you how to put together a capsule wardrobe of key pieces to help you save pennies, travel light or update your wardrobe on a budget. The trick is to only buy the essential items and ones that you can get plenty of wear out of, can mix and match and that also work with the clothes you already have.
So here’s what to look out for:
The 70s Look
The 70s trend has been around for two seasons now and is set to continue. Think fringing, flares, faux fur and button-up denim, particularly skirts. Generally, this mood includes many transitional pieces too, taking you from summer into autumn and winter. For instance, that denim skirt would look fabulous with a simple cami top and wedges in the summer and a cashmere polo neck, opaque tights and fringed ankle boots come the colder months. Upgrade your look with one or two key 70s pieces and your hot to trot.

The Flats
Good news, flat shoes are in, in a big way giving us plenty of choice. Top of the fashion heap are tie up flats, either with straps or rope ties that cross at the ankle or over the top of your feet. If you can get textured flats in fabrics or finishes such as suede or snakeskin, you’re onto a winner.

The Blouse
Yep I just said it, blouse. Not because I was ficticiously born in the late 1930s, but because the blouse is back! From pussy bow and peasant to ruffled and embellished – everyone will be wearing one. They’re so versatile too and in lighter fabrics such as chiffon, cotton and viscose, they’ll take you from season to season.
- Primark Ribbon tie check blouse, £10
The Finishing Touches
For late summer and winter sun, choose a pair of sunglasses with tortoiseshell frames for a hippy-chic look, a statement necklace with a tribal edge and a tassle bag and you’re all set.
- Primark Red Tassle Bag, £12
Once you have a few key pieces like these, you can team them with items you already have such as jeans, printed trousers, shorts and summer dresses.
TIP: Don’t bury your summer dresses in the autumn, simply wear them with a thin knit underneath or a chunky cardigan over the top, belted at the waist.
