As per usual, Brighton is bursting with amazing live music and club nights this July. There’s something for everyone as the city plays host to a ground shaking mix of hip hop legends, reggae royalty, indie- folk sweethearts, lyrical masterminds, and head spinning DJ sets. Here’s our round up of the best live music and the best club nights in Brighton. Perfect for balmy summer nights!
One Inch Badge presents: WAKEY!WAKEY! (Acoustic) + support – Latest Music Bar
Wakey!Wakey! is fronted by Michael Grubbs who plays piano and sings the vocals. Ever since his single “War Sweater” jettisoned him into stardom five years ago (thanks to a game-changing plug on One Tree Hill), the indie-pop singer has built a following that’s as passionate as his compositions. His follow-up album, Salvation, who’s first single “Wake Up (Lily, I Love You…),” is already off to an auspicious start, is amassing global, grass-roots traction.

Lout Promotions Present: Gallows – Green Door Store
The punk band’s debut album, Orchestra of Wolves, was distributed in the United States by Epitaph Records, and they were subsequently signed to Warner Bros. Records for a £1 million album contract. The band has been particularly successful in their native country, with three songs charting on the UK Single Charts, and have been featured in magazines such as Kerrang!, Alternative Press and Rolling Stone.

King Tubby’s Full Sound System – Concorde 2
A heavyweight session of Reggae, Dancehall, and Jungle, powered by the mighty King Tubby’s Soundsystem. Osbourne Ruddock aka King Tubby was a Jamaican electronics and sound engineer known primarily for his influence on the development of dub in the 1960s and 1970s. Tubby’s innovative studio work would prove to be influential across many genres of popular music. He is often cited as the inventor of the concept of the remix.

Zed Bias – Audio
Zed Bias is an English electronic musician who operates within the UK garage and broken beat genres both as a producer and a DJ. He has remixed tracks by artists such as Gabrielle, Josheen, Maxim, Pharoahe Monch and The Streets. Rave reviews are stacking up across the dance music press and beyond including DJ Mag, iDJ, XLR8R, Fact, Vice, Clash and many more. The album is being hailed as a triumphant comeback for the man who never really went away.

The Dandy Warhols – Concorde 2
The Dandy Warhols are an American rock band, formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994. The band gained recognition after they were signed to Capitol Records and released their major label album debut, …The Dandy Warhols Come Down, in 1997. In 2001, the band rose to new levels of fame after their song “Bohemian Like You” enjoyed extensive exposure thanks to its being featured in a Vodafone advertisement. The Dandy Warhols have released eight studio albums to date.

Lost Tribe Live – Ambassadeurs + Eagles For Hands – Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar
Lost Tribe Records is immensely proud to launch its first ever live event on home soil. Brighton based electronic acts Ambassadeurs and Eagles For Hands (DJ set) are headlining with support from Lost Tribe’s latest signing, [crack]. Expect eclectic forward thinking electronic music, with anything from experimental bass grooves and chillwave to house and juke, no holds barred.

Method Man & Redman + Mike Panteli B2B and DJ Outbreak – Brighton Dome
Brighton welcomes legendary American hip hop duo Red & Mef: rap superstars Method Man (of Wu-Tang Clan) and Redman (of Def Squad). The duo have been collaborating since 1994. In 1999 the two MCs appeared together on Rap Phenomenon from The Notorious B.I.G. posthumous album Born Again. They continue to record together with both having careers beyond DefJam. Supported by Juice FM’s DJ Outbreak and Mike Panteli.

Lout Presents: Slow Club + Support –Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar
Slow Club is Sheffield boy-girl duo initially categorised as “anti-folk”. The album proved there was so much more to the band and their sound – sweet harmonious hooks, rockabilly beats and exuberant yelps and yips, all held together by some breath-taking harmonising. Slow Club are defined by their own distinct and powerful partnership – Charles with bruised vocal, rasping guitar and disarming lightness of touch; Rebecca with her dash of Northern Soul and sharp wit.

Bodhi & TCTS – Audio
Audio’s Shakedown after-party features Bodhi & TCTS. TCTS aka Sam O’neill is back with a brand new EP for MTA Records, the burgeoning label helmed by Chase & Status. The 4-track ‘Games’ EP is set for release on July 13th 2014 and follows the ‘These Heights’ EP on Greco-Roman, which saw widespread support from the powerhouses of BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra including Annie Mac, MistaJam, Cameo and more.

Brighthelmstone Presents: John Fullbright – Green Door Store
Grammy nominated John Fullbright at his debut Brighton Show. The American singer- songwriter released the album, Live at the Blue Door in 2009 and three years later released his first studio album, From the Ground Up, which received a Grammy nomination in the category Best Americana Album. He has been the subject of two segments on NPR and was a 2012 winner of ASCAP Foundation’s Harold Adamson Lyric Award.

Immortal Technique – Concorde 2
Born in Peru, Immortal Technique immigrated to Harlem, New York in the early 80s. Life in Harlem eventually led him in prison on a two- year stretch where he started writing down his lyrics and left with a new focus on music. Known for his politically charged lyrics and aggressive yet captivating performances. Immortal Technique has refused to mould himself or turn mainstream and remains a fiercely independent artist with a revolutionary message.

Mod For It – Komedia
A night of far-out tunes from the Mod scene of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s! Expect a cool mix of Northern soul, Stax & Motown, ska, R&B, British invasion, 60’s Garage, new wave and two tone, from the resident DJ Jody Lee-hooker. Mod For It has been shakin’ people’s tail feathers in Brighton since 2006 and has now found a new home at Komedia. Come on down and twist the night away!
