Brighton Theatre: Our Top Seven Shows for June 2015

With the post-Fringe slump hitting Brighton this month, the City’s theatres are decidedly quieter than usual as they enjoy a well deserved rest! However there are still some Brighton theatre gems out there this June and here we’ve picked some of our top shows so you can still get your theatre fix! 

Brighton TheatreDarkMatter Presents: #ItGetsBitter – Marlborough Theatre

Too often gay rights are often only for gay whites! A night of poetry, polemic, healing and a chance to critique and imagine new queer futures. With an increase in racist and queerphobic violence and a state that uses peoples bodies to advance its imperialist agenda at home and abroad, what’s become apparent is that LGBT rights have become co-opted.

Brighton TheatreEast Is East – Theatre Royal, Brighton

This long awaited revival of a modern comedy classic promises to be unmissable. Ayub Khan Din’s semi-autobiographical account of British Asian life in the 1970s and the clash of cultures between a multi-cultural family growing up in Salford, is a play that continues to resonate and provoke discussion. Starring award-winning screen icon Pauline McLynn.

Brighton TheatreBird Studios YTG present: Singin’ In The Rain – Emporium

This spectacular show is packed full of the charm, romance, comedy and tinseltown glamour of one the world’s best loved movies and features all the songs from the glorious MGM score including Good Morning, Make ‘em Laugh, Moses Supposes and the classic Singin’ in the Rain. Singin’ in the Rain showers you with everything you could wish for in a hit musical!

Brighton Theatre Mr Stink – Saltdean Lido

An outdoor family show packed with fun, humour and a heart-warming message, based on the book by David Walliams. Chloe makes friends with Mr Stink, the local tramp. Yes, he smells a bit. But when it looks like he might be driven out of town, Chloe decides to hide him in the garden shed but there might be more to Mr Stink than meets the eye.

Brighton TheatreMoonshine’s Entirely Necessary Adventure – Dukebox Theatre

Join Moonshine on her quest to find out why she is silver as she travels through a magical land encountering wolves, pirates, mermaids and witches. With live original music and poetry this show will enchant audiences young and old for a long time.

Brighton TheatreToilers of the Sea – The Old Market

A preview/staged read/sing-through of a new original musical inspired by traditional folk music from the British Isles and based on the epic novel by Victor Hugo. Follow one man’s battle against the ferocity of nature and the prejudices of his neighbours in a beautiful, comic and at times heartbreaking quest to win the love of his life.
