Of course we’re all hoping for another sunny Weekend but come rain or shine there’s a whole lotta great events happening across Brighton this Weekend. Here are some of our favourites including beach cinema, the World Cup, theatre workshops, garden snooping, bicycle festivals, Summer Solstice celebrations, gigs, dance, club nights, nature festivals and tours.


All Weekend:

Brighton’s Big ScreenWhat could be better than free beach films alongside great food and drink? Big Screen returns for 2014 to it’s seaside home near the Brighton Wheel with a host of great films and sporting events on offer. This Weekend enjoy From the Sea to the Land Beyond, Beyond the Wave short Film Festival, The Lego Movie, Hunger Games Catching Fire, Captain Phillips, Kids Club, E.T., Jaws and Alpha Papa.

bbsBrighton Bear Weekender – Three days of bears, fun and frolics by the sea! Events include a Welcome Night with cabaret, Bear Cave club night, breakfast and lunch with the bears, a picnic in the park, Come to Daddy club night, bear sauna, street party, and much more!

Brighton Moves –  The Little Dome is landing at Jubilee Square for one weekend only! Come inside and wonder at the beauty of its light and colour and take part in a unique inclusive performance workshop for the whole family. Throughout the weekend, Brightonshed will lead theatre workshops inside the dome and there will be time to play in this incredible space.

The Garden Gadabout 2014  From small city centre courtyards to expansive open spaces, the Garden Gadabout sees over 40 private gardens and community spaces open to the public over two weekends in June. The event raises money for The Sussex Beacon, a charity for men, women and families affected by HIV.

TAKEPART 2014 – A fantastic two week showcase of hundreds events, activities and taster sessions across the city. Growing as the largest celebration of community sport and physical activity in the country, it will be crammed full of great opportunities for you, your family and friends to have fun and get active together in Brighton & Hove. This Weekend’s highlight has to be the TAKEPART Family day at Preston Park on Saturday where you can have a go at a huge array of family friendly sports and activities.


Saturday:

Bikestock 2014A day of bike related fun at Stanmer Park. See cycling officer Ben Sherratt attempting to beat the off road 48 hour mountain biking world record as well as a Bike Powered Sound System, The Funky Bike Drummer, go-ride racing with British Cycling, free Dr Bike, bike skills obstacle course, food and refreshments, bush craft, free coaching with British Cycling and roller racing with South Coast Sprints and much more!

bikeSolstice Festival – Summer Solstice, June 21st, the mark that it’s the beginning of Summer and the longest day of the year. Join Green Door Store for a day long celebration with live music from Time for T, Jouis and Dark Patrick as well as a BBQ, record fair and face painting.

Phoria – Brighton five piece alternative, electronic band Phoria return this spring with their second official EP release. The ‘Display’ EP is due for release via X Novo Records in June. See them at The Haunt with a live string quartet and interactive visuals. “…simply awe-inspiring. If you haven’t yet hopped on Phoria‘s ethereal wave, it’s about time you do, because the British five-piece is ascending ever so swiftly along the path towards musical greatness” HillyDilly 

Theo Clinkard: Of Land and Tongue – Following the success of his inaugural work Ordinary Courage, choreographer and designer Theo Clinkard returns with Of Land and Tongue. From nuanced dance that capitalises on the intimacy of the setting, to visceral physicality that rips across the floor at the audience’s feet, it is a breathtaking experience. Join us in the atmospheric setting of the Circus Street market for what will be an extraordinary evening.

Global Beats Presents: Norman Jay MBE – Good Times! – Notting Hill legend, pioneering DJ and MBE Norman Jay returns to Brighton for a scorching hot summer set. Concorde2 are proud to welcome the man behind ‘Good Times’ to spin his very own magical mixture of top tunes; this is a night that you won’t forget in a hurry!


Sunday:

Sussex-festival-of-nature-082Sussex Festival of Nature 2014 – Free annual nature festival (formerly known as Springwatch) is back for another year and once again it will take place on the beautiful field outside Stanmer House and Stanmer church. The best of Sussex’s diverse wildlife and the new South Downs National Park will come together for a family friendly event, with plenty of interesting and fun activities for everyone.

Brighton Dome Discovery Tours – Explore Brighton Dome’s rich heritage Get up close and personal with Brighton Dome past and present on this special behind-the-scenes encounter. Find out what goes down backstage before the curtain goes up out front. And seek out the hidden histories of this iconic building including a rare glimpse of the entrance to the infamous tunnel running from the Royal Pavilion to the Concert Hall.

Alexander O Neal – Best known for his hits ‘Fake’, ‘Criticize’, ‘If You Were Here Tonight’, ‘Saturday Love’, ‘Never Knew Love Like This’, ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Secret Lovers’, Minneapolis soul man Alexander O’Neal dominated the 80s with his inimitable voice and impressive musicianship. This is a rare chance to see the man himself live on stage, doing what he does best.
