There’s so many great events on this Weekend it’s hard to choose! Well fret no more, we’re here to help you decide what to do with your precious days off with our guide to the best things to do in Brighton this Weekend 19th – 20th July. With exhibitions, sand sculptures, Shakedown Festival, garden parties, live music, club nights, fun runs, Doggy Pride and Edinburgh comedy previews.


All Weekend:

Blue River Falls – A premièr of a new body of work by UK photographer Matt Henry. Blue River Falls has been two years in the making and features professional actors as well as intricate sets designed and built by the artist. Matt Henry was the recipient of category first place in the International Photographer Awards 2013 and 2014, has exhibited in Europe, North America and Asia, and is regularly featured in art and photography publications.

BThings to do in Brighton this Weekend 19th – 20th Julyrighton Sand Sculpture Festival 2014 – Experience this years themed ‘Around World in Sand’ sculptures until September alongside sand sculpture workshops, live demonstrations, unique photo opportunities, a children’s sand pit, café, gift shop and much more.

First Light : Still – A 30 year retrospective – “A journey through the inspirational photographic history of this Brighton institution.” First Light : Still represents the work of the 30 year history of the influential Brighton gallery, which closed in 2013. First Light co-founder Mark Nelson has drawn together the work of 11 of the gallery’s exhibited photographers in a unique group show.

Pushing Paint – A show featuring a select group of established and up-and-coming artists chosen to represent contemporary ‘painting’ showcasing a set of artists using oil on canvas in a variety of different ways. From washes that have dried on the day, to canvases so thick with paint they have taken a year to dry with a variety of both subject matter and style.


Saturday:

Shakedown Festival 2014 – Shakedown returns to Brighton on the 19th July with a new location in the beautiful surroundings of Waterhall Park. Expect 3 great stages full of amazing and internationally recognised acts including headliners Basement Jaxx, London duo Groove Armada, breakthrough act Gorgon City and many more! Things to do in Brighton this Weekend 19th – 20th JulySidewinder Garden Party – Join Sidewinder and celebrate the sunshine! Live music, loads of summery cocktails, an ART BATTLE, DJs and cucumber sandwiches! The BBQ will be cranking out some amazing Mexican specials, and the outdoor bar means you never have to leave the garden!
Join the staff and don your summery best- they’ll supply some boater hats and the Pimm’s!

Open Market Grand Opening – The Opening Day of Brighton Open Market. 45 new traders will be up and running and offering a brilliant range of fresh and prepared foods, as well as a wide range of arts, crafts, furniture, fashions, garden goods and more. The market traders will be offering product demonstrations in their stalls as well as free samples and discounts.

Fresh Punk VS Dude Ranch: Crazy Arm + Rivalries + Nathan Detroit + Def Jam + Hangman – Fresh Punk returns with a collaboration with the monthly pop-punk club night Dude Ranch. Five great bands turning up the heat at this summer special, we recommend wearing shorts. Don’t miss the incredible Crazy Arm, alongside a sweet line-up of pop-punk. Followed by the free entry club night that is Dude Ranch.

Supercharged Official Shakedown After Party – Celebrate after the days music is over at Shakedown, with more great music at Concorde 2! With Hannah Wants + My Nu Leng + Shift K3y. Miss Wants, notorious for her hard-hitting bass house style, is a self taught DJ from Birmingham. Over the past few years a new genre of house music has quickly risen to the forefront of the scene with Hannah securely taking the reigns as its leading lady.


Sunday:

Big Fun Run – Make 2014 your time to shape up and smile at a fun run that promises to give people of all ages and abilities the chance to get active. The Big Fun Run in Brighton is among 18 Big Fun Runs across the UK staged from July until October 2014. It doesn’t matter how quickly or slowly you go. You can run, jog, juggle, dress up, take a buggy. It’s your choice. 

Things to do in Brighton this Weekend 19th – 20th JulyDoggy Pride 2014 – It’s time to fetch those pooches and paw your way to one of Brighton Pride’s most wonderfully accessible of events. Celebrate our four-legged best friends with a day of fun and barking frolics, as dogs and dog lovers come together and shine with Pride. The day will feature awards for numerous categories, retail stalls, a glamorous catwalk doggy fashion show, bar and refreshments.

Jen Brister: Wishful Thinking – Edinburgh PreviewGet a sneak peek of Jen’s brand new show ahead of it’s Edinburgh Fringe Run. This time it’s all about politics. OK, that’s not strictly true, Jen wants to be more politically active, she wants to take a stand for the things she believes in! But she also wants to go to the garden centre. Can she fit it all in or is that just Wishful Thinking?

Family Ents Presents Black Star Riders – In October 2012 Thin Lizzy announced that they would not be recording new material under the Thin Lizzy moniker. The most recent line up of Thin Lizzy would be looking for a new project. Step forward Black Star Riders…The new band was formed by Thin Lizzy alumni Ricky Warwick (vocals), Scott Gorham (guitar), Marco Mendoza (bass) with new addition Jimmy DeGrasso on drums (Alice Cooper, Megadeth, David Lee Roth, Suicidal Tendencies).
