Free Things to do in Brighton in April 2015

Spring is here (hooray) and with lighter evenings there’s plenty of time to enjoy all of this month’s free things to do in Brighton so here’s our guide with everything from Easter Egg hunts to classic car runs!

John Marchant Gallery is pleased to present SOS – an exhibition of new paintings by Robert Sosner (b. London,1958). Robert Sosner’s paintings are beautifully poised accumulations of process, often exhibiting layer upon layer of minute adjustments and repositions of shape and colour in their surfaces and edges.

Live & Swinging Easter Special – The Grand Hotel

The VANKANtrio kick start the 4 day bank holiday weekend at the Grand Hotel singing a selection of songs made famous by the likes of Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Etta James and Tony Bennett. You’ll be transported back to the 1950’s era when Swing Music and the movies of Hollywood’s Silver Screen were in their heyday. You can expect to hear some timeless ballads and a lively collection of well known swing and jazz standards in the Victoria Bar from 8pm.

Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival: Big Sussex Market – New Rd

The Brighton & Hove Food and Drink Festival is a year-round celebration of food and drink running every Easter, May, August/September and December. The Big Sussex market, Brighton’s biggest street market, visits Brighton’s New Road twice a year with producers, restauranteurs and farmers from across the county showcasing food and drink. Expect lots of lovely tasters!

Dawn Chorus by Marcus Coates uses unique digital methods to explore the relationship between birdsong and the human voice, drawing out similarities between the behaviour of birds and humans.
Loaned by the Arts Council Collection, this multi-screen film installation features 19 individual singers recreating birdsong. Together they form a chorus that accurately simulates the sounds and timings of a natural dawn chorus.

Overhead Wires Music Presents… “The Secret Level” – The Brunswick

Acoustic Pop, Country and Folk from the new cellar bar at The Brunswick featuring Jake Maxwell –  playing honest malt soaked ballads of love and loss, Rise of the Ziggurat – combining elements of acoustica and lo-fi electronica with an alternative experimental edge, Kat Sinclair – a A 20 year old musician gaining recognition for her acoustic material and Mark Ben Wilson – combining percussive techniques, looping and vocals to create hypnotic grooves and intoxicating melodies.

Snapper Jaxx Kid’s Club – Churchill Square Shopping Centre

Churchill Square’s Snapper Jaxx kids club is back for 2015 with new adventures and characters to inspire kids and parents to get creative together.  It’s raining It’s pouring and Snapper Jaxx is…. putting on it’s wellies and jumping in the puddles! Join Jemima Puddle Splosh and her weather forecaster friend Mack In Tosh for a windy, wet, sunny, blustery, scorching, sploshy adventure!

Brighton Marathon 2015 – Madeira Drive

With its record breaking course, upbeat entertainment and vociferous crowds, Brighton is firmly established in the calendar as the UK’s premier go-to Marathon. The all-action Brighton Marathon Weekend kicks off with a flourish at the two-day Expo on Friday, continues with the Mini Mile on the Saturday and concludes in south coast style with the Brighton 10km and Marathon on Sunday morning April 12 2015.

UntitledCreative Craft Fair – Brighton Unitarian Church

For crafts, jewellery, tarot reading, face painting, homewares and more head down to the Creative Craft Fair, showcasing some of Sussex’s best and most creative crafty people and their wares. You’ll also be helping to Raise money for local children’s charity ‘The Rocking Horse Appeal’ as its donations on entry rather than a formal entry fee. Their aim is to give local crafters and makers a beautiful place to showcase their talents at an affordable price.

Austins to Brighton 2015 – Madeira Drive

To celebrate 110 years of the Austin Motor Company this run from Wallington to Brighton features Austins manufactured up to 1955. Head down to the finish line at Madeira Drive on the sea front where there will be an Austin autojumble.

London to Brighton Jaguar Run – Madeira Drive

London to Brighton Jaguar Run will return on Sunday 26th April 2015. Hundreds of Jaguars will be flagged away from Chartwell in Kent to mark the start of the run and finish along Brighton’s Madeira Drive where every available inch of tarmac will be filled with pristine classic motors. The event will feature an impressive display of Jaguars, brand new trade and autojumble village at the finish.
