Brighton’s favourite & the world’s largest free charity beach festival Paddle Round The Pier 2014 returns to Brighton on July 5th & 6th.

This annual water sports and beach lifestyle celebration offers something for all the family whether you like to join-in or simply sit in the shade with a cocktail while the kids play. There are performances, world class races on the water and also the chance to have-a-go yourself. It’s not all wet-stuff as there’s plenty of dry activities to enjoy too!

Taking up most of Hove Lawns (just west of the old West Pier wreckage) the Paddle Village hosts exhibitions, retail and performance space. It’s a free to enter event however as it’s for charity they do ask for a donation of just £1 from adults but kids go free!  “Paddle” (as it’s affectionately known among the locals) began back in 1996 and last year saw visitor numbers of 60,000 proving it ongoing popularity and laid-back appeal. Over the last few years the event has donated over £200,000 to charity

psu10This years charities are the RNLI, Freddysmile a Sussex based, family run charity raising money for children who have been diagnosed with cancer and Surf Life Saving GB a charity which has approximately 6,000 members nationwide helping to make our beaches a safer and more enjoyable place for everyone.

Features for 2014 include, The Fabulous Kids entertainment stage, Kids area, rides and amusements, huge sandpit, skate & BMX ramps, the main Music Stage, Ukulele Stage, Tea Dance, world food courts, bars, Parkour, slalom skate, retail stands, a seated grandstand, exhibitions, displays, demo beach, Surf Life Saving Competitions, SUP races (competitors for some of the races have come from as far afield as France, Belguim, Brazil and Hawaii), boat races, Streetball, strongman, muscle beach, beach volleyball and the title event “Paddle Round The Pier”. A firm favourite of local businesses and clubs alike is the chaotic carnage of the “Paddle Something Unusual” where teams have to think of the most ridiculous thing they can – then try to paddle it round the pier! Also the Croydon Steel Orchestra will be playing on Saturday the 5th.

Any disabled child, young person and their family/carers can use the “Paddle Access Beach” (full of every Watersports toy possible) The Paddle Crew work on a ratio of 3:1 to enable the kids and young people the full support they need to enjoy a day in the sea with family and friends ensuring this great event is completely inclusive!

If you’ve not worn yourself out during the day there will be an official Paddle Round the Pier Carribean Party at Big Beach Cafe on Saturday 5th July from 8.30pm. Expect to enjoy the sounds of the Croydon Steel Orchestra along with DJs, food, bar, a raffle and prizes for the best Carribean fancy dress. This is a ticket only event, the price of which is £10 and includes a cocktail on arrival, food and transport from/to the Paddle Village. Please contact Cheryl on accounts@paddleroundthepier.com for tickets.
