It could be raining, it could be sunny, it’s probably not snowing (we hope!) but it is Spring so get out in wonderful Brighton and get along to some of these great highlights for the Weekend ahead. With SICK! Festival, arts and crafts, music, club nights, comedy, exhibitions, mermaid photo shoots, sports and kids events there’s plenty to choose from!

All Weekend:

SICK! Festival – SICK! is a new art and cultural festival which confronts the physical, mental and social challenges of life and death. Tackling issues surrounding adolescence, mental illness, ageing and death, the festival offers an international programme throughout March, with live performances, dance, installation, film and debates across Brighton.

Makers Boutique Exhibition 2014 – A carefully curated exhibition showcasing only the very best of Sussex creative talent. With an eclectic mix of contemporary and affordable arts and crafts on display, including original artwork, prints, cards, photography, ceramics, glass wear, jewellery, fashion and textiles. Find them slap bang on Brighton Seafront in the Fisherman’s Quarter.

Signs of Light – A group exhibition at Ink_d Gallery, bringing together a dazzling collection of artists working in neon and light featuring Andy Doig, Carne Griffiths, Dan Baldwin, Tina Keane, Grande Dame, Magnus Gjoen, Pure Evil and others. With light boxes and neon galore and an amazing exclusive edition of neon letters by Andy Doig.

Into the Blue – This family friendly exhibition of all things blue, at Hove Museum, is a journey of discovery in science, art and history. Using the blue objects as a starting point the exhibits lead to the discovery of some fascinating facts and the investigation of some intriguing questions.

We Will Be Free! The Tolpuddle Martyrs Story – Set in 1834 this play follows the extraordinary true story of George and Betsy Loveless. He was a Methodist preacher and the leader of the six Dorsetshire farm labourers who were tried, convicted and condemned to harsh transportation by an oppressive Government for having the temerity to swear a secret oath and form a union to fight against a succession of wage cuts inflicted by the local landowner. At the Marlborough Theatre.

Saturday:

Christian O’Connell: This Is 13 –  8-time Sony Gold Award Winning DJ and highly sought after TV presenter and writer Christian O’ Connell makes his first ever stand up appearance at Komedia. Delving into the depths of his youth we revisit Christian as a newly fledged teen. Christian had begun to create a list of hopeful accomplishments and dreams he would one day go on to achieve. Visiting each vision one by one, Christian narrates through his checklist.

The Quint Fontana Comeback Special – Showbiz legend Quint Fontana brings his hit Edinburgh show to Three and Ten. Backed by his long suffering keyboard player Tony Lakeside, Quint brings you a show packed with songs, stories, tears, laughter, revenge, pathos, derision, shouting, discomfort, posturing and massive delusions of grandeur. Can he hold it together? Probably not!

Juke Joint Jamboree – Taking you back to the dance-halls of New Orleans where the cats and kittens strut their stuff on a Saturday night. Expect vintage hits and boutique rarities from an era of high octane rhythm n blues and rock n roll records. Also expect the unexpected from one of the midnight shows, be it burlesque, circus, theatre or otherwise! At The Mesmerist.

Sunday:

Sport Relief 2014 – The Brighton & Hove Mile – Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile will be setting off on the seafront on Madeira Drive from 10am, with hundreds of locals getting on their marks, set and go for Sport Relief. Why not go down and give them a cheer?

Mermaids of March – Photo shoot! – Calling all mermaids! Get to Brighton Beach for an afternoon photo shoot. All for fun and to help promote March of the Mermaids in 2014! Shooting in various locations on Brighton Beach, including Palace Pier, the Fishing Museum boats and the carousel.

myminidisco – Spinning cool music for cool kids! Plus a dance Instructor & MC; hoola hooping; face painting, baby play area and fully licensed bar. At Komedia.

Salsa Celtica – Salsa Celtica’s whirlwind mix of Latin and Celtic rhythms, virtuoso musicians and exuberant energy is guaranteed to set the dancefloor on fire. Don’t miss them at The Old Market.
