Oklahoma born and raised singer-songwriter Samantha Crain crosses the Pond to begin her European Tour, kicking off in the UK at Brighton’s very own Komedia.
This 27 year old folky, with a Native American heritage, comes with an acoustic guitar to serenade the audience with a selection of her songs, including tracks from her critically acclaimed third studio album, ‘Kid Face’. The album sees a subtle development in her songwriting style from her previous records, whilst she still keeps to her roots in Americana and country.
The most apparent thematic thread running through ‘Kid Face’ is restlessness. The first-person narrators of these 11 songs are in constant motion, as they feel the tug of the far horizon or the need to escape from their present circumstances, ruminating about what may lie ahead and what they’re leaving behind—roots, family or a lover. The song arrangements are interesting, intricate, and introverted in this widely varied gently soaring album.
Rolling Stone said about Samantha that “Her voice is gorgeously odd — all fulsome, shape-shifting vowels that do indeed billow like fog” whilst Time Out New York praises her performance:
“…she prompts plenty of comparisons to Joanna Newsom and Neil Young – but you’ve got to witness this tiny chanteuse deliver her punch of a punk alto live to truly grasp her ever-changing take on Americana.”
Kid Face is released in the UK on Monday 13th January on Full Time Hobby Records.
