Hip-hop pioneers Sugarhill Gang formed in 1979, named after Harlem’s Sugar Hill district. The New Jersey-natives Michael ‘Wonder Mike’ Wright, Henry ‘Big Bank Hank’ Jackson and Guy ‘Master Gee’ O’Brien released their break-out single Rappers Delight that same year: not only becoming the first rap single to make the Billboard top 40 in the US, but also bringing hip-hop culture out from the underground. The trio made musical history together and brought their trailblazing sound around the world. They have multiple gold and platinum singles and albums under their belt, and their music has been sampled by stars from Busta Rhymes to Lil Kim.

Still selling out venues worldwide, they’re ready to rock the house in Brighton this July. Their energetic live show will bring together fans that have been there from the beginning, and a new generation who are discovering their music for the first time. As they told Maryland’s Herald-Mail in 2013 “We’ve had the ability to transcend generations and that’s a gift“. Supported by Melle Mel & Scorpio (ex-Grand Master Flash), prepare for a night of old-school classics from these hip-hop heroes.

About The Writer

I recently graduated from the University of Manchester with a degree in Anthropology. Since moving back I have been happily reacquainted with Brighton’s idiosyncratic streets and colourful characters. I like writing and riding my bike around the city hunting for hidden treasures.
