“You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope…I have loved none but you.”

For one night only Chamber Opera Chicago presents a new musical adaptation of one of Jane Austen’s most admired novels: Persuasion at The Old Market.

The performance is touring with a comprehensive troop of 50 artists including singers, world champion Irish dancers and a chamber orchestra. It’s both intimate and grand as it weaves one of the most irresistible love stories ever written, the story of a woman who has lost at love and gets a second chance.

By transforming the work into a musical, creator Barbara Landis has enhanced the lyrical beauty of Austen’s language and created a performance which respects and communicates the nuances of Austen’s acclaimed wit, ironic style and skill for the delicate epitomising of social custom and human nature.

Persuasion tells of Anne Elliot, who has rejected a proposal of marriage from the one man she truly loved, Captain Frederick Wentworth. She was persuaded by her godmother that Captain Wentworth was unworthy, but after a separation of nearly a decade, he returns from sea with both rank and fortune. Anne is nearly an old maid and her once rich family is on the verge of bankruptcy. Can Anne win him back? Can he forgive her for breaking off their engagement rather than following her heart? And can their lost love be rekindled?

The spectacular performance is fully staged with a chamber orchestra and incorporates works by Beethoven, Haydn, Handel, Corelli, and Pleyel as well as traditional Irish and Scottish pieces.

The show is carefully constructed with authentic Regency costumes and sets as well as John Boesche’s beautiful and immersive projected images which allow the audience to be transported seamlessly from salon to oceanside to concert hall.

It’s a labour of love for award winning stage director and actor Nick Sandys, who originally hails from Coventry and has previously directed at The Met and Lyric Opera of Chicago.

Chamber Opera Chicago is a professional, not- for- profit opera company devoted to making great opera affordable. With award-winning designers and acclaimed directors from around the world, audiences can expect high quality, innovative productions that move audiences and bring opera to life.

“No ‘Persuasion’ needed to see this Chicago treat…Chamber Opera Chicago’s production was a treat for the eyes and ears…astounding!” Emily Scotcher, Isle of Wight County Press

“This story of Anne Elliot’s second chance at love is told with such wit and life that I predict that this diamond will be remounted for years to come.” Lori Davis, Chicago Stage Style, Jane Austen Society of North America.
